Freewheeling

First day of doing a partial commute to work is done and over with. Decided to stop by Freewheeling on my way home since it is sorta on the way. Got there just before it closed and talked with Jimmy, I think that's his name. Told him hi from my good buddy daverill. Remebered you from back in the day. Cool shop. They have some real expensive IF frames and others up on the wall. Looks like they've been there for a while. One IF mtn bike must have had a first generation Rock Shock on it.

I think the place has had a bit of a change in business philosophy since you were there. Jimmy made it sound like those were the days. They have a lot of bread and butter bikes and can't afford to turn down as many tune-ups from people with shitty bikes.

again, i repeat, jimmy is the man ... as evidence, i offer you the following.

~back in the day he used to work for Campagnola technical race support ... pulled stints at the 1986 Coors Classic and also the World Championships driving the Campy car, handing out wheels to the likes of Bernhard Hinault, Greg LeMond, Sean Kelly, and a bunch of other legends.

~he also was the sole bicycle mechanic on the shoot for "American Flyers" starring none other than Kevin Costner. Jimmy told me that was one of the worst gigs he had, as he was stuck working on all of those bikes solo and constantly regluing tubulars because they got a bad batch or something. he did get a cameo though, which is good for a laugh if you konw him.

~ask this guy anything about just about any road bike, mountain bike or accessory and he'll give you the straight dope. moreso than me, a pure bike dork. gotta love it.

'nuff said.

thanks for dropping in on those guys and reporting back Len. it warms my heart to know they are sticking with it and keeping the dream alive. i think they've been in business close to 30 years now, maybe more.
